          Description

In Fiji the landfills receive 60,000 tonnes of waste in a year and that is just the amount that is collected from the urban areas. Rural communities do not have that access and resort to either burning, burying or dumping in the ocean. In the pacific, we are used to receiving inferior goods and 60% of our purchases are trashed within the first 6 months of purchase. The Fusion Hub is a social enterprise that focuses on eradicating the global waste crisis and advancing women's economic empowerment. Our business is divided into 3 approaches to tackling this crisis. Our 1st approach is reactive, whereby we transform waste into sustainable furniture and home decor pieces, we run a 2 weeks "waste-2-worth" capacity building program for women living in disadvantaged economic situations and upon completion provide them with income generating opportunities with the use of waste. Our major focus is to train women from remote island communities where waste disposal is a challenge since there do not have access to waste collection services and the only option they have is to either burn, bury or dump in the ocean (all of these have serious environmental impacts).

The second aspect of the business is encouraging sustainable living which we do through running airbnb's where all the items are made from waste materials. We also host team building activities (Creating things from waste) and we also do waste management consultancy work for organisations and help them create waste management strategies and plans.

The third aspect of our business is the "Proactive Approach". During the pandemic, we saw an increasing trend in grocery and produce shopping. There has also been an increase in buying of PPE and hygienic products. This however means higher consumption of plastic packaged foods and plastic packaged products which adds greatly to the global waste crisis. Our solution is to provide our customers with a "zero-waste" shopping experience and support our local SME's, Market Vendors and Farmers. The main objective here is to encourage a zero waste lifestyle and to support our economy by stimulating the SME sector and supporting local SME's and farmers by providing them with a sustainable market access.
