DescriptionGlobal shipping has a significant impact on the environment due to high levels of carbon emissions, but it has also been deeply studied the impact of shipping's acoustic pollution on sea life.
Noise emitted by the rotation of ship propellers drowns out sound frequencies used by a wide range of marine animals to communicate, travel, reproduce and feed, affecting their behavior and basic survival needs. Particularly affected are cetaceans, but species such as fish, squids, mollusks, and even zooplankton are also known to be disturbed, hurt and killed by noise pollution.
SANC-S (Ship Active Noise Canceling System) is an idea that offers one solution to the problem by reducing the amount and intensity of ocean noise pollution. It's based on a physical phenomenon of sound waves known as destructive interference and relies on a technology similar to the one used on expensive noise-canceling audio equipment.
SANC-S is a stream-processing-system device installed on the stern of a ship, near the propeller. It is capable of taking input of real-time noise pollution and emitting back almost instantaneously a 180° out of phase sound wave that overlaps with noise and cancels it.
The data processing happening inside SANC-S uses machine learning to improve the efficiency of the system in time. It relies on a central database that contains continuously updating information, uploaded by every commercial vessel using the system, on how the ship's characteristics (size, weight, and others) and its movement variables (speed, acceleration, angular velocity of the propeller, and others) determines the noise emitted.
