          Description

There is very little effort at the international. level to encourage youth to take up agriculture as an occupation and to improve existing farm techniques. Nearly, 70% of African farmers and 40% of Asian (especially, South Asian) farmers are dependent on rainfed agriculture with primitive methods of farming, inefficient irrigation systems, and erratic monsoon.

This not only affects yield per hectare, and total agricultural output but also, hampers the financial condition of many farmers and their families with a meager income. Moreover, climate variability and unpredictable weather patterns also add to the deplorable and pathetic conditions of the farmers along with other socio-economic disadvantages. Some of these climatic problems of rainfed farmers are-

Scarcity of water with respect to intensity and distribution

          Low relative humidity

Varied soil moisture affecting soil fertility and productivity

We have made a sincere effort to help these farmers through the technological innovation of young minds. We have designed a device prototype that shall provide a detailed local weather forecast to facilitate agricultural activities more easily.

We plan to integrate our device with the open CI platform to provide an all-round solution to all the farmers' needs. The platform is capable of intaking data from free weather APIs as well as our device taking into consideration the data from the meteorological department as well as localized data from the device. The device has many capabilities such as, with the help of soil moisture and other sensors , it can tell the preferable crop to grow on the type of soil and its moisture level contents.

The background algorithm serves the purpose of comparing both the inputs and giving accurate results which can then be communicated to the farmers through SMS and the device' display window which helps in targeting even farmers with no access to the internet.

The platform is in the form of a webpage. (live update community, grievance report feature or customer care)

          USP's

          • Works on slow internet ( Internet is optional, can work without it too)
          • Easy to use achieved through simple and to point interface
          • Primary services including daily weather forecast and grievance centre accessible even without the internet.
          • SMS alerts for emergency scenarios.
          • High accuracy with the integration of inputs from the meteorological department and on ground devices.

Further details are in the presentation.
