I would like to develop an international standard rating system to allow consumers to know some of the environmentally-related resources that go into the creation of a particular fashion item/garment. This could include pictogram/numerics (modeled after international fabric care label standards) that indicate how many ounces of water required to grow the natural fiber, how many ounces of fossil fuel to create synthetics, etc. It would also be interesting to have a travel rating for how far raw materials had to travel to site of production. I see this as a consciousness raising tool to encourage consumers to be more mindful about extending the life of fashion items through repair or recycling, as opposed to outright disposal. As consumers become more knowledgeable and adjust their spending habits to favor the most environmentally-conscious production processes this will influence manufacturers' production approaches to have the least amount of environmental impact.
