          INTRODUCTION

          PROBLEM STATEMENT

          One of the roles of intelligence agencies is to ultimately keep our communities and citizens safe. Agencies and security departments around the world have massive amount of terrorist information available to them however being able to correlate the relationship within the large data to enable investigations can be extremely difficult.  Officers and investigators have a difficult task of trying to combine massive amounts of information into a coherent story about criminal actors, gangs or even potential terrorism networks.

          PROPOSAL SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES

          In this proposal, we aim to demonstrate and create awareness on how the use of link analysis and data visualization can be used by intelligence agencies to help relationships within a group of terrorists. Data analysis can be defined in simple terms as an exploratory process that usually begins with specific questions and requires curiosity, the desire to find answers and a good level of persistence since those answers are not always easy to come by. Data visualization is the graphical representation of data. This involves producing images that can communicate relationships among the represented data to viewers of the images. This is achieved through the use of a systematic mapping between graphic marks and data values in the creation of the visualization.

          APPROACH/METHODOLOGY

          We shall use an already existing tool in our demonstration;

          Terrorist dataset: Show the relationship and demonstrate how communication occurs between terrorist/ terrorist groups located in different locations.

          Cyber threat dataset: Show how a terrorist or a group of terrorists in control of a destructive threat such as a virus or malware can collude to distribute an attack online.

          Tests to be performed:

          CONCLUSION

          A new type of intelligence is needed by security agencies to help detect and identify online terrorists’ communication patterns.  The basis of link analysis and data visualization is the ability to find the relationship between entities involved in a crime and these entities could be people, location, events etc.

          Terrorist organizations can use terrorists’ data to detect and report connections in large sets of data using link analysis and data visualization
