          Description

Technology has been developed for commercialisation of the bio based and biodegradable polymer PLA (Polylactic acid).

I am in the process of establishing a state of the art manufacturing facility of Biopolymer, which can be used in various single-use plastic applications including packaging, 3D Printing, textiles, technical textiles etc.

The use of plastic in packaging currently consumes about 40% of all plastic production. About half of this amount is used in food packaging and other commodity applications which is largely dominated by petrochemical-derived plastics. Upon disposal, packaging plastic typically degrades very slowly and do not meet increasing demands in society for sustainability and environmental safety. Plastic produced from biopolymers such as poly (lactic acid) evoke commercial interests worldwide as it is manufactured from renewable resources such as food & agricultural waste, corn, sugarcane, etc and have the potential to meet environmental and health requirement.

In terms of traction, we have already achieved lab-scale production of biopolymer (PLA) and produced some of the products out of it. These products were displayed in a couple of exhibitions at Delhi and Mumbai and found good response and queries. The further scale-up of the process to pre-commercial plant has been done and design is ready.

The technology is developed indigenously with Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Guwahati and patented. India has been struggling with an issue of plastic waste and several states have ban use of plastics. In such a scenario, it is imperative that the alternate to plastics must be developed and Biodegradable is the best option available. The Biodegradable polymer I intend to develop is fully in sync. with international standards. India offers a unique advantage in terms of accessibility of raw material as well as lower cost of labour which make it the best destination for manufacturing it. The potential of Biopolymer is huge in India and Overseas.
