In many developed nations, open defecation is a major problem. As per the report of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) INDIA more than half rural population 52.1% of the country defecate in open in 2015. According to the recent report of Swacchta Survekshan, about 30.78% population of the country in rural are still defecating in open in 2017. Currently the government in INDIA is providing subsidy for construction of toilet, however, people refrain from using due to lack of awareness of new economic technologies and adverse effect of open defecation.
The toilet is the Most basic and integral need of a livelihood. The traditional approach of people living in rural areas is defecating in open even if there is a toilet available, people prefer to go open area to avoid the process of cleaning pit often done in few years. This faecal matters can be decomposed for biogas generation, and its manure can be used in many ways like agricultural purpose, soil conditioning and etc.
In a village in Maharashtra, India where a population of 750 people approximate, are discouraged to use the constructed toilets due to the following reason, that was cited in the site visit to the village.
The following problems are given below:
PROPOSED INNOVATIVE SOLUTION:
The solution to this problem is Smart A two-pit system which is different than the present pit system
The design pit has a minimum size in cross-section and it is more durable
Separation of excreta(stool) and Urine-Water by the skimmer
The area and depth of the pit is minimum as well as it will utilise human waste as well as urine water so makes it economical
For earlier decomposition human waste hoarse stool/ cow dung should be mix with human stool to get good manure
Urine-Water will be treated by activated carbon and sand filter
The mixture of excreta and urine will be separated by the medium screen with the help of skimmer attached with gear mechanism
After separation, urine-water and excreta will be transferred to their respective pits with the help of pipes
Urine-water and excreta will be used for the irrigation purpose after treatment
Alum, activated carbon and sand filter will be used for the treatment of urine-water once in a week
The excreta will decompose itself in the pit with the help of horse stool it will faster decomposition of faecal matters(Excreta)
