This toolkit is intended as a knowledge repository, including case studies of successful challenges, best practices for organizing challenges of all kinds, and channels for contacting experts during different phases of the challenge process.

    Challenge Phases

    Prepare

    Phase 1: Preparation

The initial phase involves identifying the problem you are trying to solve or the opportunity you are aiming to highlight. Identify your goals and desired outcomes and determine whether the challenge you are envisioning is the right approach for achieving them. It is essential to have a comprehensive knowledge of the resources available and to start establishing internal and external partnerships.

    Develop Phase

    Phase 2: Development

In this phase, you will determine the structure of the challenge and agree on the implementation timeline with your team. This phase involves engagement with several groups. Coordinate with your internal teams to establish the eligibility and submission standards for participants, the terms and conditions, the judging criteria and the non-monetary incentives to be offered to winners. Set out a detailed plan for your announcement methods and outreach campaign with your communication team.

    Conduct

    Phase 3: Conduct

In this phase, you will roll out the communication plan and officially launch your challenge on the AIP. This phase includes accepting ideas and solutions and interacting with innovators. After the submission deadline, you will evaluate innovations, validate their eligibility and determine the winners.

    Award

    Phase 4: Award

In this phase, you will pick the announcement approach from the wide variety of available channels such as the AIP, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other platforms. Non-monetary incentives, such as detailed feedback, recognition or connections to incubation programmes, will be offered to the winning participants.

    Transition

    Phase 5: Transition

Once the challenge is completed, you will compare the desired outcomes of the challenge with the actual outcomes, with a view to achieving sustainable results. You will document the outcomes and impacts of your challenge. You may also consider the next steps for the winning innovations, for example, connecting the winners with third parties that can aid in their implementation.
